Green infrastructure for air quality improvement in street canyons

چکیده

Street canyons are generally highly polluted urban environments due to high traffic emissions and impeded dispersion. Green infrastructure (GI) is one potential passive control system for air pollution in street canyons, yet optimum GI design currently unclear. This review consolidates findings from previous research on assesses the suitability of different forms terms local quality improvement. Studies effects various options (trees, hedges, green walls, screens roofs) critically evaluated, synthesised, possible recommendations summarised. In addition, measurement methods used quantifying effectiveness greening reduction analysed. Finally, we explore studies that have compared plant species mitigation. We conclude influences depend canyon geometry, meteorological conditions vegetation characteristics. roofs potentially viable existing where there typically a lack available planting space. Particle deposition leaves usually quantified by leaf washing experiments or microscopy imaging techniques, latter which indicates size distribution more accurate. The pollutant capacity largely depends its macromorphology relation physical environment. Certain micromorphological traits also positively correlate with deposition, including grooves, ridges, trichomes, stomatal density epicuticular wax amount. complexity limited number novel mean offering specific unfeasible. highlights need further research, particularly walls screens, substantiate their efficacy investigate technical considerations.

Ventilation efficiency of street canyons with intersections

When looking at domains with several building densities, the resulting average concentrations caused by traffic when unknown, are often linearised between known building densities. To verify if this assumption is correct, several cases of street canyons with intersections, are simulated using the DALESURBAN model. The traffic is represented by a constant emission line source spanning the entire...

The Effect of Turbulence Models on Numerical Prediction of Air Flow within Street Canyons

This study assesses the sensitivity of numerical results of air flow modelling within an urban environment to the six different turbulence models applied in a specific case of a studied staggered cross-road. The principal parameters investigated in this comparison are position of centres of vortices within a street canyon, two components of the spatial velocity vector, turbulent kinetic energy,...

Green Walls Could Cut Street-Canyon Air Pollution

Rows of tall buildings can create a unique urban habitat known as a street canyon. These canyons trap traffic pollutants, limiting their dispersal into the atmospheric boundary layer that extends as high as 2,000 meters above the ground. A new study suggests that vegetation in street canyons may reduce air-pollutant concentrations much more than previously reported and suggests innovative plant...
